Quebec Muslim Group Calls for Probe into Online Threats After Eid Gathering
————————–
A Quebec Muslim advocacy group has urged authorities to investigate hateful and threatening social media posts that appeared after a private Eid al-Adha gathering in Trois-Rivières.
The event was held Wednesday morning at the Trois-Rivières hippodrome, where about 200 Muslims gathered peacefully for Eid prayers. Organizers said it was the first time Eid prayers had been held outdoors in the city.
The Canadian Muslim Forum said the online reaction showed the dangers of unchecked Islamophobia and anti-Muslim hatred. Some comments reportedly referenced the 2017 Quebec City mosque shooting, while others included threatening language and anti-Muslim remarks.
Organizers said they contacted Trois-Rivières police before the event because of concerns over online rhetoric. Police officers were present near the site during the prayers.
The Trois-Rivières police service said it was aware of the online comments but did not confirm whether an investigation had been opened.
The Canadian Muslim Forum thanked Mayor Jean-François Aubin for calling for calm and urged public officials and community leaders to condemn Islamophobia.
