Repatriation of Australian Families Linked to ISIS Begins from Syria’s Roj Camp

The process of returning Australian families associated with the extremist group ISIS from the Roj camp in northeastern Syria has begun, following security and legal coordination with relevant authorities.

According to recent verified reports, four Australian families—comprising around 13 women and children—have left the camp and were transported toward Damascus as part of a renewed effort to facilitate their return to Australia.

The transfer was carried out under the supervision of local authorities and with coordination between Kurdish-led security forces and the Syrian government. Officials indicated that the families would remain in Damascus temporarily—reportedly for several days—while arrangements for onward travel are finalized.

However, the situation remains complex. The Australian government has stated it is not directly facilitating the repatriation, though it acknowledges that Australian citizens have the legal right to return. Authorities have also warned that any returnees suspected of involvement in extremist activities may face investigation or prosecution under counterterrorism laws.

This is not the first such attempt. Earlier in 2026, a separate group of 34 Australian women and children attempted to leave the same camp but were forced to return due to coordination issues with authorities in Damascus.
