Amnesty International Calls for Accountability and Justice in Syria Amid Ongoing Rights Violations

Amnesty International has urged Syria’s interim authorities to take urgent steps to address serious human rights violations, warning that a lack of independent investigations and accountability is worsening the suffering of victims and prolonging instability in the country.

In a recent report, the organization said several regions across Syria have witnessed rising violence, including reported mass killings and attacks on civilians. It said some incidents could amount to war crimes in the absence of credible international investigations and prosecutions.

The report also highlighted a rise in abductions of women and girls in several provinces, including cases involving ransom demands and coercion. Amnesty criticized what it described as an inadequate official response and limited preventive action.

It further documented extrajudicial killings in southern areas, where civilians were reportedly killed inside homes or public spaces. The organization said that despite the formation of investigative committees, there has been little tangible progress, raising concerns about ongoing impunity.

On the humanitarian front, Amnesty warned of worsening living conditions driven by drought and declining agricultural output, with millions now in need of urgent assistance amid reduced international funding.

The report also pointed to Syria’s long-standing crisis of missing persons, estimating that more than 100,000 people remain unaccounted for since 2011, with families increasingly demanding answers and justice.

Amnesty International called for comprehensive transitional justice measures, including the release of arbitrarily detained individuals, fair trials, full access for international investigators, and strengthened humanitarian support for affected populations.
