UN Women Urges End to Restrictions on Afghan Women, Calls for Their Voices to Be Heard
————————————-
UN Women has called for an end to ongoing restrictions on women and girls in Afghanistan, urging the international community to listen to Afghan women and respect their rights and autonomy.
In recent statements, the UN agency emphasized that women’s lives and choices should not be subject to external control, stressing that Afghan women must be allowed to determine their own futures without imposed limitations on their behavior, dress, or participation in society.
Since the return of the Taliban in 2021, women and girls in Afghanistan have faced extensive restrictions, including limits on education, employment, movement, and public presence. These measures have been widely criticized by the United Nations and international human rights organizations.
UN Women reiterated that these policies have severely impacted fundamental rights, particularly access to education and participation in public life, and called for urgent action to reverse them.
The statement aligns with broader UN positions urging Afghan authorities to uphold international human rights obligations and ensure that women are fully included in social, economic and political life.
