Grand Ayatollah Sistani Affirms Relief Work in Southern Lebanon as Religious Duty

The office of the eminent Shia Marja, Grand Ayatullah Ali al-Sistani, has affirmed that ongoing humanitarian and rescue efforts in southern Lebanon may rise to the level of a collective religious obligation (wājib kifā’ī), underscoring the sanctity of saving lives amid escalating dangers.

In a statement issued on Wednesday, the Marja’s office responded to an inquiry from volunteer rescue teams operating in the city of Nabatieh, who sought guidance on the permissibility of continuing their work despite serious risks and repeated targeting.

The statement clarified that if such efforts contribute to saving lives or reducing harm to believers, they are among the deeds beloved to God and may attain the level of a collective obligation—binding upon the community until fulfilled by a sufficient number.

The office of His Eminence also expressed deep appreciation for the sacrifices of paramedics and relief workers, praising their steadfastness under difficult conditions. It further invoked prayers for their protection and safety, while offering condolences and mercy for those who have lost their lives in the path of humanitarian service.

Rescue teams in Nabatieh had indicated that they continue to provide emergency medical assistance and humanitarian aid to dozens of affected families despite ongoing danger, raising questions about their religious duty in such circumstances.
