An iftar, prayer gathering and public meeting in solidarity with political prisoners was held on February 28 at the Centre for Study of Society and Secularism in Kurla (West), Mumbai. The annual event was organised by Innocence Network India and marked its eighth year, drawing former prisoners and their families, who organisers said comprised nearly 80 percent of attendees.

Speakers highlighted concerns about undertrial and convicted prisoners they described as innocent, stating that many remain incarcerated across India.

Among those addressing the gathering was Sajid Ansari, who was acquitted in the 2006 2006 Mumbai train bombings case after spending 19 years in prison. He described it as his first Ramadan at home in nearly two decades and called for solidarity across communities to support those still in jail.

Sadiq Qureshi, a former detainee under the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act, spoke about his imprisonment in a case linked to the Popular Front of India.

A message from Rona Wilson, an accused in the Bhima Koregaon case, was read at the event, emphasizing the importance of sustained support for those facing prolonged legal battles.

The programme concluded with prayers, the breaking of the fast, and a renewed pledge by participants to continue advocacy efforts.
