Eight Migrants Found Dead in Libya and Greece Amid Rising Mediterranean Crossings
——————————
Authorities in Libya and Greece have reported the deaths of eight migrants attempting to cross the Mediterranean Sea, highlighting the continuing dangers faced by asylum seekers in the region.
According to Al Jazeera, Libyan officials said that five bodies were recovered near Tripoli, with local residents reporting that some of the deceased were women. Greek authorities reported that three additional bodies were found off the coast of the island of Crete after a wooden boat carrying migrants capsized. Rescue teams managed to save several survivors from the vessel.
The incident underscores the ongoing risks for migrants using unsafe routes across the Mediterranean, a route frequently used by people fleeing conflict, poverty, and persecution in North Africa and the Middle East.
International organizations, including the International Organization for Migration (IOM) and the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR), have repeatedly warned of the high mortality rates on Mediterranean migration routes, emphasizing the need for safer pathways and humanitarian assistance for displaced populations.
These latest casualties come amid a broader pattern of migrant deaths in the Mediterranean, reflecting the persistent humanitarian crisis and the urgent need for coordinated international action to protect vulnerable people attempting to cross the sea.
