Dozens of Christians Killed, Nearly 175 Abducted in Nigeria Attacks
…..
At least 35 Nigerian Christians were killed and nearly 175 others abducted during a series of attacks across central and eastern Nigeria in January 2026, according to information compiled from advocacy groups and local sources, as reported by media news reports. The incidents highlight persistent insecurity affecting religious communities in several states.
Most of the attacks occurred in Kaduna, Plateau, Benue, and Taraba states, areas that have seen repeated violence in recent years. Christian organizations said villages and church congregations were targeted in separate incidents, though no armed group has formally claimed responsibility for the killings or abductions reported during the month.
In Kaduna State, attackers reportedly abducted worshippers from three churches in the Kurmin Wali community of Kajuru Local Government Area on January 18. Advocacy groups estimate that between 163 and 167 people remained in captivity days later. Witnesses said the assailants arrived on foot and motorcycles during church services.
Separate reports indicated that Christians were also killed in Plateau, Benue, and Taraba states in early January. Community representatives attributed many of the attacks to armed bandits and Fulani militants. In Plateau State, youth leaders said villagers were assaulted in daylight, leaving some dead and others seriously injured.
Christian Solidarity Worldwide (CSW) and other organizations condemned the violence and urged Nigerian authorities to prioritize the release of abductees. CSW Nigeria’s leadership called for improved security measures and greater support for vulnerable communities, while acknowledging recent military efforts aimed at countering armed groups in affected regions.
Nigeria continues to face international scrutiny over religious freedom and security challenges. The country is listed among those of particular concern by the United States for violations of religious freedom. Open Doors’ 2026 World Watch List ranks Nigeria among the most dangerous countries for Christians, citing high numbers of faith-related killings.
