Italy Renames Olbia Airport in Honour of Prince Karim Aga Khan IV

Italy has officially renamed Olbia’s main airport after Prince Karim Aga Khan IV, recognising his key role in transforming Sardinia’s Costa Smeralda into an internationally renowned tourism destination. The decision was formally announced on January 15, marking a posthumous tribute to the late Ismaili leader’s long-standing contribution to regional development.

At a ceremony held at Olbia City Hall, Mayor Settimo Nizzi confirmed the airport’s new name: Olbia–Costa Smeralda–Prince Karim Aga Khan IV Airport. Princess Zahra Aga Khan attended the event, thanking Italian authorities for the honour and highlighting her father’s commitment to long-term planning that respected Sardinia’s environment, culture, and local communities.

Prince Karim Aga Khan IV first became involved in Sardinia in the early 1960s, when the area lacked basic infrastructure. He promoted sustainable tourism through strict architectural guidelines and improved connectivity, including supporting the airport’s development. He died in February 2025 aged 88 and was succeeded by his son, Prince Rahim al-Husayni.
