Islamic Relief USA hosts charity event to address local food insecurity

Islamic Relief USA partnered with the SHARE Center Lexington to host a meal-packing event in Lexington, Kentucky, bringing together community volunteers to address local food insecurity. The event, held on Saturday at the gymnasium of Lexington Universal Academy, marked the first collaboration of its kind between the two organizations.

According to www.wkyt.com, dozens of volunteers worked in coordinated teams to assemble meal kits containing rice, beans and carrot flakes. Organizers said the initiative aimed to prepare between 20,000 and 30,000 meals for people struggling with hunger across central Kentucky. According to Feeding Kentucky, nearly 700,000 residents in the state face food insecurity.

Zayd Shabandri, development coordinator for Islamic Relief USA, said the effort reflected a commitment to serving local communities and supporting neighbors in need. He added that such initiatives also help build understanding and connection within the wider community.

Arsh Ansari, lead nutritional director at the SHARE Center, said the meals will be distributed through the SHARE Center, God’s Pantry Food Bank and other partner organizations. He noted that the center regularly works with individuals facing food and employment challenges, making participation in the event a natural fit.

Organizers said approximately 100 volunteers registered to take part in the meal-packing initiative.
