Crane Collapse Causes Train Derailment in Northeastern Thailand

At least 32 people were killed and around 80 injured when a train derailed in northeastern Thailand after a construction crane fell onto three carriages, Reuters reported. The incident occurred on Wednesday morning in Sikhio district, Nakhon Ratchasima province, on a train traveling from Bangkok to Ubon Ratchathani. Authorities said more bodies may still be inside the wreckage.

Transport Minister Phiphat Ratchakitprakarn said 195 passengers were on board and confirmed that the casualties were primarily in two of the carriages struck by the crane. He ordered a full investigation into the incident. Police noted that rescue teams had to pause recovery efforts temporarily due to shifting debris from the crane.

The crane was part of an elevated high-speed rail project under construction above the existing railway. The impact caused the train to derail and briefly catch fire. Ministry images showed overturned carriages and firefighters extinguishing smoke from the site.
