Muharram 22nd marks death anniversary of famous Shiite scholar Sheikh Tusi

Muhammad bin Hasan bin Ali bin Hasan, known as Sheikh al-Tusi and Sheikh Al-Ta’ifah, is one of the most famous Shiite scholars and jurists.

Sheikh Tusi was born in Ramadan 385 AH, in Tus, one of the cities of Khorasan, and died on the 22nd day of Muharram 460 AH at the age of 75 in Holy Najaf.

Sheikh Tusi is the author of two books, al-Tahdhib and al-Istibsar, among principal Shia hadith books.

Sheikh Tusi has an important work on the exegesis of the Qur’an by the name al-Tebyan fi Tafsir al-Qur’an.

Tusi’s important jurisprudential works are the books of al-Nahaya, Al-Khilaf and Al-Mabsut, which contain his comments and notes on jurisprudence and are still of interest to Shiite jurists.

He initiated a transformation in Shia ijtihad and expanded its topics, making it independent from Sunni ijtihad. His most famous student is Abul Salah Halabi.
