Fresh Border Clashes Erupt Between Afghan and Pakistani Forces

Afghan authorities say overnight clashes broke out between Afghan and Pakistani forces along the southern border, marking a renewed escalation despite a fragile ceasefire, Arab News reported. The exchange of fire occurred across the Spin Boldak–Chaman crossing, a key trade route linking Afghanistan’s Kandahar province with Pakistan’s Balochistan region.

The incident represents a breach of the truce brokered by Qatar and Turkey, which has largely held since October following deadly confrontations that claimed dozens of lives on both sides. Taliban government deputy spokesperson Hamdullah Fitrat said Pakistani forces initiated the latest violence, prompting a response from Afghan border guards. He reported that five Afghans — including four civilians — were killed and five others injured during the clashes.

Frequent border closures resulting from the tensions have disrupted trade and the movement of people, with businesses reporting significant losses. Local traders said prolonged delays often lead to perishable goods spoiling inside trucks, while many patients seeking medical treatment in Pakistan are left stranded.

Efforts to convert the temporary ceasefire into a long-term agreement have made little progress. The latest confrontation comes amid unconfirmed reports of behind-the-scenes talks between officials from both countries. Analysts say fundamental disagreements continue to hinder negotiations.

Kabul-based political analysts noted that Pakistan’s demand for the Taliban to guarantee its security is unrealistic, arguing that even foreign forces previously stationed in Afghanistan could not provide such assurances. They warned that unless both sides adopt more practical positions, the talks are unlikely to advance and further violence will remain a risk.
