Pope Warns of Rising Islamophobia, Calls for Dialogue and Renewed Peace Efforts
————————————-
Pope Leo XIV has warned that Islamophobia in Europe is increasingly driven by political forces seeking to exclude migrants and people of different faiths or ethnic backgrounds, Anadolu Agency reported. Concluding his first official foreign trip to Türkiye and Lebanon, the pontiff said the coexistence of Christians and Muslims in Lebanon offers important lessons for Europe and North America, urging societies to pursue deeper dialogue and mutual respect.
Returning to Rome, the pope outlined the Vatican’s ongoing but discreet diplomatic engagement on several global crises. He said the Holy See is working behind the scenes to encourage de-escalation in Lebanon, including through outreach to regional and international actors. He reaffirmed that sustainable peace in the Middle East remains possible and that the Vatican will continue urging all parties to renounce violence and return to dialogue.
On the war in Ukraine, Pope Leo noted that the conflict has become multidimensional and requires broader international coordination. He said recent U.S. peace proposals were revised to include European participation, which he described as essential. He also highlighted Italy’s potential role as a mediator, with the Vatican supporting such efforts.
Addressing tensions between the United States and Venezuela, the pope expressed concern for civilians and called for diplomacy over military action. He added that future papal travel may include visits to Africa, Argentina, Uruguay and Peru.
