Extremist Sunni Groups Hold Rallies in Syria Claiming Umayyad Legacy, Local Sources Report

According to Shia Waves agency citing local sources, rallies involving extremist Sunni and Salafi groups were held simultaneously in Damascus and several other Syrian cities, with participants reportedly emphasizing their adherence to the historical legacy of the Umayyad Caliphate.

The gatherings, which were broadcast live on some local media channels, featured slogans supporting the Umayyad lineage and declarations of loyalty to Muawiyah ibn Abi Sufyan’s historical path. According to the report, organizers intended to use these public demonstrations to consolidate their ideological presence and communicate their beliefs to the wider public.

Local analysts cited by Shia Waves suggest that these rallies reflect ongoing efforts by certain groups to assert influence amid Syria’s complex socio-political landscape, particularly after Abu Mohammad al-Julani, a former al-Qaeda affiliate and current leader of Hay’at Tahrir al-Sham, consolidated control over Syria, a nation long affected by civil war and sectarian conflict.
The agency reported that the events, while involving a limited number of participants, drew attention from local authorities and sparked discussions on social media about the role of extremist ideologies in contemporary Syria.
