Newly uncovered mass graves across Syria are shedding further light on the scale of abuses committed during more than a decade of conflict, with over 100 sites documented so far, according to a report by The Wall Street Journal.
In the southern town of Izra, forensic specialist Dr. Mamdouh al-Zoubi led a volunteer team to a farm where new owners had reported the presence of human remains.

Near a former Syrian government military checkpoint, the team recovered 31 bodies in varying stages of decomposition, many stacked atop one another, suggesting repeated burials over several years. Dr. al-Zoubi said such discoveries have become expected, noting that thousands of missing people are believed to be buried in unmarked sites nationwide.

Investigations by international rights groups, including the International Center for Transitional Justice and Lawyers & Doctors for Human Rights, have identified at least 134 mass-burial locations, with many more likely undiscovered. Some sites hold thousands of victims, while others contain smaller numbers of detainees who died under torture or were executed extrajudicially.

Witness accounts from former officials and medical workers describe systematic methods for disposing of bodies taken from detention centers, often tagged or numbered before burial. Additional graves have been found elsewhere, including a well in the village of Ma’an near the M5 highway, where remains were discovered after a farmer noticed hair floating in the water.

The ongoing discoveries underscore the enduring humanitarian crisis and highlight calls for accountability and transitional justice to help families learn the fate of their missing relatives.
