Senegalese Imam Detained in New York Sparking Concern Among African Muslim Community
————————————–
A Senegalese imam has been detained in New York, prompting concern among members of the African Muslim community, The Shia Waves reported.
Imam El-Hadji Hady Thioub, a religious leader for the West African Muslim community in the Bronx, was arrested by U.S. Homeland Security officers around five weeks ago and transferred to the Delaney Hall immigration detention facility in New Jersey.
According to the source, he did not have legal immigration status at the time of his arrest and signed a voluntary departure agreement — a document his lawyer says was signed under pressure and without the presence of an interpreter.
His detention has alarmed African Muslim community members, with religious leaders and immigrant-rights organizations calling for his release.
