Muslim Tech Experts Develop ‘Halal Internet’ Ecosystem to Counter Online Risks

A group of Muslim digital experts has launched a comprehensive “Halal Internet” ecosystem aimed at providing safer online spaces for Muslim families amid growing concerns about harmful digital content, IQNA reported.

The initiative, called Kahf, was founded by professionals with backgrounds at Meta, Tesco and British Telecom, who say the internet has become a “moral battleground” for young users.

Kahf’s founders cite alarming exposure levels to online harm, including pornography, gambling and anti-Islamic content. Co-founder Omar Al Zabir, formerly part of Meta’s “severe harm” team, said he witnessed widespread online exploitation and harassment, reinforcing the need for a protective digital structure.

The Kahf ecosystem includes a DNS filter blocking millions of harmful websites, a “halal browser” with AI tools that automatically blur inappropriate images, a children’s platform with verified educational videos, and an ethical media and social network free from prohibited advertising. A Sharia-compliant digital wallet is also planned.

Kahf says it already has 8 million installations and 2 million monthly active users. The founders describe the project as a community movement designed to offer Muslims a values-aligned digital environment rather than simply blocking content.
