Majority of Americans Support U.S. Recognition of Palestinian Statehood
…………..
A majority of Americans believe the United States should recognize Palestinian statehood, according to a Reuters/Ipsos poll. The six-day survey, which concluded Monday, found that 59% of respondents supported official recognition, while 33% opposed it and the remainder were undecided.
Support for recognition was strongest among Democrats, with 80% in favor, while 41% of Republicans shared the same view. Roughly half of Republican respondents, 53%, opposed U.S. recognition. The findings suggest that President Donald Trump’s stance against Palestinian statehood diverges from public sentiment.
The poll comes as several U.S. allies — including Britain, Canada, France, and Australia — have formally recognized Palestine in recent weeks, a move condemned by Israel. Meanwhile, about 60% of Americans surveyed said Israel’s military response in Gaza has been excessive.
Despite criticism of his broader policies, Trump has seen a modest rise in approval for his handling of foreign affairs, now at 38%, up from 33% earlier this month. Over half of respondents said he should receive significant credit if his ceasefire plan between Israel and Hamas succeeds, though renewed violence in Gaza has cast doubt on the truce’s durability.
