Rising Tensions Across Kashmir and India: Protests, Crackdowns, and Discrimination

Authorities in Jammu and Kashmir have sealed the office of Tehreek-e-Hurriyat, a separatist group long associated with Syed Ali Shah Geelani. According to Muslim Mirror, the move is part of a broader crackdown on Kashmiri political organizations as tensions remain high following insurgent-linked violence in the region.

In India’s Uttar Pradesh state, Muslim Mirror also reported that Muslim women wearing the burqa were denied entry to a school in Kanpur during a parent-teacher meeting. School officials justified the decision on dress code grounds, but parents and community leaders criticized the action as a discriminatory measure targeting Muslim families and undermining religious freedoms.

Meanwhile, NPR noted that Indian Muslims are bearing growing economic and social pressure in the aftermath of the April militant attack in Kashmir. Business owners in several states reported boycotts, lost contracts, and heightened scrutiny from authorities, further marginalizing the community amid already strained relations.

Across the border, unrest has also flared in Pakistan-administered Kashmir. According to Shia Waves Agency, citing Agence France-Presse, protests in Muzaffarabad entered their third day as members of the Awami Action Committee demanded structural reforms and greater political and economic rights. Local reports said more than a dozen people were injured after clashes with security forces, who intervened to disperse demonstrators.
