UK Study Warns AI-Generated Content Fuels Anti-Muslim Hate and Extremism

A new study presented to the UK Parliament’s Home Affairs Committee in September 2025 has revealed that artificial intelligence is increasingly being used to spread anti-Muslim hate and far-right extremism. According to The Independent, the research—conducted by the London School of Economics—analyzed more than 600 social media posts, particularly from far-right groups such as Britain First and Defend Europe.

The findings showed that AI-generated images and videos portraying Muslims as threats or instigators of disorder received up to 30% more engagement than other content. Researchers linked such material to last year’s violent riots in Southport, where false claims wrongly identified the suspect in a mass stabbing of children as a Muslim asylum seeker.

The study warned that social media algorithms amplify divisive content, accelerating the normalization of racist and Islamophobic narratives online. Lead researcher Dr. Beatriz Lopez urged the government to introduce stricter regulations, recommending that Ofcom establish a specialized unit to monitor AI-driven extremism. While platforms such as TikTok and X claim to enforce rules against hate speech and AI-generated misinformation, the report criticized the persistence of extremist content and its serious real-world consequences.
