Report: UN Warns of Backlash Against Gender Equality
—————————–
A new report, “Gender Snapshot 2025,” from UN Women and the UN Department of Economic and Social Affairs, warns that global progress on gender equality is under threat due to a backlash against women’s rights and a defunding of related initiatives.

The report, which is a leading source of data on gender equality, highlights the potential economic gains of closing the gender digital divide. It estimates that this could benefit 343.5 million women and girls, lift 30 million women out of poverty by 2050, and boost global GDP by an estimated $1.5 trillion by 2030.

Despite some past successes, such as a decline in maternal mortality and new laws against discrimination, the report indicates that the world is on track to miss every indicator for Sustainable Development Goal 5 (gender equality). If current trends persist, 351 million women and girls will still be living in extreme poverty by 2030. Additionally, the report notes that 676 million women and girls are now living in areas of conflict, the highest number since the 1990s, making conflict deadlier for them.
