The number of centenarians in Japan has reached a new record of 99,763, marking the 55th consecutive year of increase, according to the Anadolu Agency. The data, provided by the Ministry of Health, Labor and Welfare, shows a growth of 4,644 individuals aged 100 or older compared to the previous year.

The report notes that women make up the vast majority of this group, accounting for approximately 88% of the total. The oldest person in the country is a 114-year-old woman, while the oldest man is 111. The article also provides historical context, highlighting that when the government’s survey began in 1963, there were only 153 centenarians, a number which has since grown exponentially. The average life expectancy in Japan for 2024 was 87.13 years for women and 81.09 years for men.
