Al-Azhar Observatory Condemns Religious Discrimination Against Muslims in Spain

Al-Azhar Observatory for Combating Extremism has strongly criticized a recent decision by the municipality of Jumilla, in Spain’s Murcia region, which bans Muslims from holding religious practices and celebrations in public spaces. The decision was issued under a local government led by a coalition of the far-right Vox party and the conservative Popular Party.

The Observatory stated that this measure violates democratic principles and reflects an exclusionary trend that threatens peaceful coexistence in Spanish society. It warned that the move goes beyond a mere administrative dispute, indicating a concerning rise in populist and anti-Muslim sentiment across parts of Europe.

Citing Article 16 of the Spanish Constitution and Article 18 of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, the Observatory described the ban as a clear violation of religious freedom, asserting that claims of public interest cannot justify such discriminatory actions.

The Observatory praised the Spanish Bishops’ Conference for denouncing the decision as unacceptable discrimination, and also welcomed the Spanish government’s formal challenge against the measure, calling it a violation of national values and an international embarrassment.

In conclusion, Al-Azhar urged European institutions and the global community to take serious action against rising extremism and hate speech, emphasizing the importance of safeguarding religious freedom, equality, and constitutional rights for all citizens, regardless of faith.
