Somalia’s Three Former Presidents Condemn Government Over Land Misuse
————————————-
In a rare joint statement, Somalia’s three former presidents—Sharif Sheikh Ahmed, Abdiqasim Salad Hassan, and Mohamed Abdullahi Farmaajo—have criticized the current government led by President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud for unlawful appropriation and sale of public land, Africanews reported. They allege that land transfers were conducted without proper legal oversight, bypassing key agencies and failing to deposit proceeds into the state treasury.
The former leaders warn that this misuse of public land is causing forced evictions, particularly highlighting clashes in Tarabunka involving rival security forces. They urged businesses and the public to avoid engaging in transactions involving illegally transferred properties, calling such deals illegitimate and risky.
This marks the first time all three surviving ex-presidents have united in public criticism, reflecting serious concerns about land governance and its impact on Somalia’s political stability. Civil society groups and political analysts have welcomed their call for greater accountability in land management.
