U.S. Expands Visa Holder Reviews Amid Crackdown on Foreign Nationals
———————————-
The Trump administration announced a sweeping review of more than 55 million valid U.S. visa holders to identify any violations that could lead to visa revocation or deportation, Africanews reported. The State Department emphasized “continuous vetting” of all visa holders, including tourists, to detect ineligibility such as overstaying visas, criminal activity, or links to terrorism.
This expanded review marks a significant increase from prior efforts, which mainly targeted students and exchange visitors. The process involves examining social media, law enforcement, and immigration records, both domestic and abroad. Officials noted that since President Trump took office, visa revocations have more than doubled, with student visa cancellations nearly quadrupling.
In a related move, the administration halted issuing worker visas for commercial truck drivers, citing safety concerns and the impact on American truckers’ jobs. Secretary of State Marco Rubio highlighted the need for drivers to meet high language proficiency standards to improve road safety.
Critics argue the broad vetting could strain resources and affect individuals who may never return to the U.S. Nonetheless, the administration maintains the measures are vital for national security and public safety as part of its broader immigration enforcement strategy.
