Iranian media reported Sunday that millions of pilgrims from across Iran, as well as from Arab and other foreign countries, are converging on the holy city of Mashhad to mark the anniversary of Imam Ali al-Reza’s martyrdom during the final days of the Islamic month of Safar.

Pilgrims have been attending mourning ceremonies and religious rituals at the shrine of Imam Reza, while also commemorating the Arbaeen of Imam Hussein and the martyrdom anniversary of the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon them). Reports note that the period from the 20th of Safar until the end of the month traditionally draws large crowds of visitors every year.

The administration of the holy shrine has prepared special programs and services to receive pilgrims. Alongside Mashhad, the city of Qom, home to the shrine of Sayyida Fatimah al-Masumah (peace be upon her), is also a major destination for visitors, including international tourists and non-Muslim guests.
