IMF Forecasts 3.1% Global Economic Growth in 2026, Warns of Contraction in ME, Central Asia

The International Monetary Fund (IMF) has raised its forecast for global economic growth in 2026 to 3.1%, up from its previous estimate of 3.0%, according to its latest World Economic Outlook, released on October 13, 2026. The fund said global economic activity remains resilient, supported in part by investment in artificial intelligence infrastructure, although the outlook remains vulnerable to geopolitical tensions, rising debt and financial market volatility.

In contrast, the IMF expects the economy of the Middle East and Central Asia to contract by 0.3% in 2026, a sharp downgrade from its April projection of 1.9% growth. The fund cited the impact of the ongoing regional conflict, higher energy prices and disruptions to shipping through the Strait of Hormuz, a vital route for global oil supplies. The scale of the impact varies across countries, with several economies facing particularly severe economic pressures.

The IMF also warned that lower-income countries and energy-importing economies remain vulnerable to supply shocks and rising prices for fuel and other essential goods. Although the global economy has continued to expand, the fund cautioned that prolonged conflict, persistent inflation and tighter financial conditions could further weaken growth. It projected global growth of 3.4% in 2027, assuming that shipping conditions improve and energy supplies gradually normalize.
