Taliban Awaiting ‘Sharia Permission’ to Reopen Girls’ Schools
……………
The Taliban’s spokesperson, Zabihullah Mujahid, has stated that the reopening of schools and universities for girls is still under consideration, pending “precise Sharia permission.” In a media interview, Mujahid noted that the movement places great importance on “women’s chastity and their movement,” and is awaiting “convincing arguments” from religious scholars before making a final decision.
Since returning to power in August 2021, the Taliban has barred girls from attending secondary and higher education, a move that has drawn widespread international condemnation and local protests. Despite continued pressure from the international community, the group has not yet provided a clear timeline for lifting the ban, fueling concerns about the ongoing denial of a fundamental right.
