Over 85% of Islamophobia Incidents in Australia Go Unreported

A report by the Islamic Council of Victoria (ICV), sourced by the International Quran News Agency (IQNA), reveals that more than 85% of Islamophobia incidents in Australia go unreported. The report, which surveyed over 2,000 members of the Muslim community, highlights a significant gap between the number of discriminatory and hate-related incidents experienced by Muslims and the number that are officially documented.

The IQNA article highlights several key details from the ICV report, which found that the underreporting is a result of multiple factors. Many victims of Islamophobic acts, which can range from verbal abuse to physical attacks, believe that reporting the incidents is a “waste of time” or that law enforcement will not take their concerns seriously. This lack of trust and confidence in the system is a major barrier to reporting. The report also found that Muslim women, particularly those who wear a headscarf, are disproportionately targeted.

The findings are a source of concern for Muslim community leaders and human rights advocates, who emphasize the need for greater awareness and trust in reporting mechanisms. The ICV is calling on both government agencies and law enforcement to work more closely with Muslim communities to address this issue and ensure that victims feel empowered to report incidents without fear of being dismissed.
