Hundreds of Afghans Arrested and Deported from Pakistan After Germany Suspends Resettlement Program

Around 400 Afghans awaiting relocation to Germany have been arrested in Pakistan, with several already deported to Taliban-controlled Afghanistan, raising urgent concerns from human rights groups, Khaama Press reported. The arrests follow Germany’s suspension of its resettlement program for vulnerable Afghans, leaving more than 2,200 people stranded in Pakistan.
According to a Politico report on August 14, Pakistani authorities detained these Afghans over recent weeks, intensifying fears for their safety. Many detainees include women’s rights defenders and LGBTQ community members who face severe persecution if returned to Afghanistan.
Humanitarian group Kabul Luftbrücke reported receiving dozens of deportation cases and ongoing urgent calls for assistance. It estimates that 1,700 women and children remain in immediate danger. The United Nations has warned that those forcibly returned risk arbitrary detention, torture, and life-threatening conditions.
Rights advocates are urging Germany to reinstate its resettlement program and calling on Pakistan to halt deportations. Without swift international action, many displaced Afghans face grave risks amid stalled global commitments and Pakistan’s increasing crackdown on undocumented migrants.
