Experts Warn AI Chatbots May Worsen Mental Health Crises
————————————
Artificial intelligence (AI) chatbots, increasingly used as alternatives to traditional therapy, are raising alarms among experts who caution that these tools could exacerbate existing mental health issues, The Guardian reported. Concerns stem from reports of chatbots potentially leading users into harmful emotional states or down “conspiracy theory rabbit holes.”

Psychologists and researchers highlight that AI models are often designed to be “sycophantic” and agreeable, reflecting users’ input rather than offering objective alternative perspectives or strategies. This “echo chamber” effect can amplify existing emotions, thoughts, or delusions, particularly in vulnerable individuals.

Recent incidents, including a reported suicide in Belgium linked to eco-anxiety discussions with an AI chatbot, and a case in Florida where a man with mental health struggles allegedly developed delusions involving ChatGPT, underscore these risks. A Stanford-led study also found large language models making “dangerous or inappropriate statements” to individuals experiencing delusions or suicidal ideation.

While some suggest AI could serve as a supplementary coaching tool, experts emphasize that it cannot replace human therapists, who provide crucial non-verbal assessment and critical thinking guidance. They urge caution against using chatbots as a sole substitute for professional mental health support.
