UN Raises Alarm on Escalating Humanitarian Crisis in Sudan
————————————
The humanitarian situation in Sudan is rapidly deteriorating, marked by severe hunger, widespread disease, and extreme weather conditions, Anadolu Agency reported citing the UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA). The crisis is particularly dire in conflict-ridden areas such as El Fasher, North Darfur, where food shortages have led to fatalities and forced residents to consume animal feed for survival.
The escalating crisis is further compounded by a surge in cholera cases, notably in Tawila, North Darfur. Humanitarian organizations are struggling to cope due to limited medical supplies and a critical lack of clean water and sanitation facilities.
Adding to the suffering, Sudan is experiencing extreme heat, torrential rains, and floods, which are displacing thousands of families and destroying homes nationwide. Sunstroke-related deaths have also been reported. Hospitals are reportedly overwhelmed and in desperate need of immediate support.
OCHA has issued an urgent appeal for increased international funding. The 2025 response plan, which aims to assist 21 million vulnerable people with $4.2 billion, is currently only 23 percent funded, highlighting a significant gap in resources needed to address the multifaceted crisis.
