India: Assam’s Anti-Muslim Policies Draw National Concern
———————————-
Policies originating in India’s northeastern state of Assam, targeting its Muslim population, are reportedly spreading nationwide, an article on Scroll.in revealed. These measures, often presented as efforts to address “illegal Bangladeshi immigrants,” involve demolitions, detentions, and deportations, primarily affecting Bengali-speaking Muslims.

Data from the India Hate Lab indicates a “sharp and deeply concerning” escalation in hate speech, targeted harassment, and violence against these communities in Assam. Between July 9 and July 30, the group documented 18 rallies with hate speech and nine cases of targeted violence, including physical attacks and efforts by ethno-nationalist groups to prevent settlement.

Mass demolition and eviction drives have displaced thousands, with over 1,600 families evicted in Dhubri and over 1,000 homes razed in Goalpara, leading to casualties from police firing.

India has also intensified efforts to expel Muslims to Bangladesh. Since May 2021, Assam’s government has evicted 50,000 people, predominantly Bengali Muslims, from land. Human Rights Watch reported unlawful expulsions of hundreds to Bangladesh, with India’s Foreign Ministry identifying 2,369 individuals for deportation. Opposition leaders accuse the ruling BJP of using these policies for political gain.

Organisations like India Hate Lab call for authorities to halt evictions, ensure due process, and hold accountable those inciting hate or violence.
