US Army Eliminates Senior ISIS Leader in Syria

The United States military announced on Friday that it conducted a raid in Aleppo province, northern Syria, resulting in the death of a senior Islamic State (ISIS) leader and two of his sons, Rudaw reported.

The operation took place in the town of al-Bab. According to a statement from the US Central Command (CENTCOM), the targeted ISIS leader, Dhiya’ Zawba Muslih al-Hardani, along with his two sons affiliated with ISIS, were killed during the raid.

General Michael “Erik” Kurilla emphasized the US commitment to pursuing ISIS militants relentlessly, stating, “ISIS terrorists are not safe anywhere — whether where they sleep, operate, or hide.”

Since its defeat in 2019, ISIS has been attempting to rebuild its strength, especially following the overthrow of Syrian dictator Bashar al-Assad’s regime on December 8 by a coalition of opposition groups led by the now-disbanded Hay’at Tahrir al-Sham (HTS).

Kurdish authorities in northeast Syria (Rojava), who helped defeat ISIS with support from the US-led coalition, have repeatedly warned of ISIS’s resurging threat. In mid-January, Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) commander Mazloum Abdi stressed the importance of intensifying efforts against ISIS to prevent its resurgence.
