UN-Habitat Warns of Critical Water Shortage in Kabul

Over six million residents in Kabul face severe water shortages, according to a warning issued by the United Nations Human Settlements Programme (UN-Habitat). In a statement shared on Thursday, July 17, the agency described the situation as “unprecedented,” citing rapidly declining water levels in recent years.

UN-Habitat called for urgent intervention, noting that without immediate action, the crisis could reach catastrophic levels. The agency emphasized that resolving the issue will require long-term infrastructure investment, sustainable water management, and broad cooperation among stakeholders.

The organization also stressed the importance of raising public awareness to ensure responsible water usage. The warning follows earlier concerns raised by UNICEF, which projected that Kabul could run out of water entirely by 2030 if current trends continue.

The deepening crisis highlights the need for a coordinated national and international response to prevent further deterioration and protect access to clean water for millions of people in the Afghan capital.
