A new nationwide study has revealed deeply concerning figures about the prevalence of Islamophobia in the UK, highlighting how hate crimes continue to disproportionately target the country’s Muslim minority. According to the research, one in three Britons has witnessed anti-Muslim comments or discriminatory behaviour at work or in educational settings.

Disturbingly, 10% said they encounter such hostility regularly, indicating that Islamophobic attitudes are becoming normalized in spaces meant to foster inclusion and diversity, such as schools, universities, and professional workplaces. The report also found that although Muslims make up only around 6.5% of the UK population, they account for 42% of victims of recorded religious hate crimes—a figure that points to what experts describe as an entrenched pattern of discrimination and tacit acceptance of anti-Muslim bigotry.

In response to these findings, community leaders have launched the “Unity Project,” a national initiative aiming to counter rising hate through education and public engagement. The campaign works to debunk widespread myths about Islam, challenge misleading media narratives, and raise awareness about the religion’s true teachings.

Key focus areas include addressing misconceptions such as “Does Islam oppress women?” and clarifying the distinction between Islam and extremism. Organisers say these efforts are an urgent call to confront the growing culture of distortion and scapegoating targeting Muslim communities in Britain today.
