Medicine Shortages in UK Pose Serious Risks to Patients, Warns Parliamentary Report
…………………..
Patients in the UK are facing serious harm due to ongoing and widespread medicine shortages, according to a new report from the All-Party Parliamentary Group (APPG) on pharmacy. The report highlights critical shortfalls affecting those with conditions such as ADHD, menopause, and diabetes, causing distress and dangerous delays in care.
Steve Race, APPG chairman, noted increasing concerns from constituents unable to access essential medicines, including antibiotics and life-sustaining treatments. The report describes medicine shortages as a chronic, structural challenge impacting the NHS and pharmacy sectors.
A survey cited in the report found that over 90% of pharmacists and prescribers experienced shortages of ADHD medications, with 76% reporting issues with hormone replacement therapy and diabetes drugs. The APPG warned that shortages have significant negative effects on patient health and well-being.
Pharmacists spend hours daily sourcing alternatives and managing patient anxiety, with many calling for changes to prescribing protocols to allow pharmacists greater flexibility during shortages. The Department of Health and Social Care stated it is addressing global supply issues with robust measures and has committed additional funding to support community pharmacies.
