Nigerian authorities in Katsina strikes peace deal with bandit leaders

Authorities in Nigeria’s northwestern Katsina state have reached a peace agreement with criminal gangs in an effort to curb ongoing violence, Arab News reported. According to Internal Commissioner Nasiru Mu’azu, 12 bandit leaders met with local officials and community representatives on Saturday in Danmusa town, where they pledged to cease hostilities and pursue peace.

The gangs, known locally as bandits, have long been involved in raids, kidnappings, and attacks across Katsina and neighboring states. As a sign of goodwill, the groups reportedly surrendered weapons and released 17 hostages, promising to free more.

The peace initiative was initiated by the bandits themselves. While the Katsina government had previously rejected negotiations after past efforts failed, Mu’azu said the state was open to dialogue since the move came voluntarily from the groups. In recent years, Katsina has relied on military support and a local vigilante corps to counter the bandit threat.
