Tensions Rise in India Amidst Communal Incidents and Free Speech Concerns

Communal tensions and concerns over freedom of expression are escalating in India, highlighted by recent events in Rajasthan and Haryana, according to articles published by Muslim Mirror and the Clarion.
In Jhalawar district, Rajasthan, signboards prohibiting Muslim entry were erected in several villages following communal violence sparked by the alleged murder of a local photographer on April 24. This incident led to the looting and vandalization of approximately 40-50 Muslim-owned businesses. The “Jai Shri Ram” posters were removed on Monday, May 19, after a formal complaint from the Muslim community, though residents reported police leniency towards those involved in the violence.

Meanwhile, in Sonipat, Haryana, Ashoka University Associate Professor Ali Khan Mahmudabad was sent to judicial custody on May 18 after being arrested over a Facebook post concerning “Operation Sindoor.” He faces charges including inciting armed rebellion and disturbing communal harmony. The arrest, following complaints from BJP and the Haryana State Commission for Women, has drawn widespread criticism from civil rights activists and academics concerned about the criminalization of expression. The Supreme Court has granted him an interim bail following an urgent hearing.
