58 Unidentified Corpses Found in Libyan Hospital Amid Militia Crackdown

Libyan authorities discovered 58 unidentified bodies in Abu Salim Accidents Hospital on Monday, marking the second such discovery in days, Arab News reported. The remains, some burned or decomposed, were found in a morgue refrigerator previously controlled by the Stabilization Support Apparatus (SSA), a militia whose leader, Abdulghani Kikli (“Ghaniwa”), was killed last week.

The Government of National Unity (GNU) under Prime Minister Abdulhamid Al-Dbeibah has intensified efforts to dismantle armed groups, triggering deadly clashes in Tripoli that killed eight civilians. The SSA failed to report the corpses, prompting an investigation.

This follows the Saturday discovery of nine bodies in another SSA-controlled hospital. The GNU demolished the militia’s “77 Camp” on Monday, repurposing it as a national park.

Libya remains unstable since Muammar Gaddafi’s 2011 ouster, with rival factions vying for control. A 2020 truce paused major warfare, but localized violence persists.
