World Health Organization Prepares for Future Without US Funding

As the World Health Organization (WHO) convenes its annual assembly in Geneva, officials face the daunting challenge of operating without the United States, historically its largest funder, Arab News reported. The US, which contributed about 18% of WHO’s budget, announced its withdrawal process in January 2025 under President Donald Trump’s executive order. The formal exit is scheduled for January 21, 2026.

With a $600 million shortfall expected this year and projected budget cuts of 21% over the next two years, WHO is scaling back operations. Priority will be given to critical functions such as approving new medicines and responding to disease outbreaks, while less essential programs, including some training initiatives and offices in wealthier countries, may face closure.

China is poised to become the largest state contributor, increasing its share from just over 15% to 20% of the WHO’s assessed contributions following a 2022 funding overhaul. WHO officials emphasize adaptation to a new multilateral funding landscape without US support.

The assembly also aims to finalize a historic agreement on future pandemic preparedness and seek additional donor funding. Meanwhile, WHO staff have been asked to volunteer without extra pay to support the event, highlighting the agency’s financial strain.

Despite uncertainties, WHO remains committed to its global health mission amid shifting geopolitical dynamics and funding challenges.
