Flash Floods Devastate Badakhshan, Affecting Over 1,000 Households

Flash floods have ravaged northeastern Afghanistan’s Badakhshan Province, submerging farmland, destroying homes, and killing livestock in a severe climate-related disaster, Amu TV reported. Over 1,000 households in Jurm and Baharak districts were impacted, with 1,233 hectares of crops—including vital wheat fields—washed away, according to the UN Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO).
The floods killed or displaced over 500 livestock, crippling pastoral communities reliant on agriculture. Yumgan District also reported extensive damage to cereal crops and grazing lands, exacerbating food insecurity in the impoverished region.
Badakhshan’s vulnerability to climate shocks has grown due to deforestation and erratic weather. Afghanistan’s ongoing humanitarian crisis, compounded by limited aid access and political constraints, has left rural areas like Badakhshan underserved. No formal Taliban response has been issued, and international agencies warn of dwindling capacity amid funding shortages.
Residents described widespread destruction, while experts stress the urgent need for flood infrastructure and climate-resilient farming to mitigate future disasters.
