Pakistan Calls for UN Action on Kashmir at Security Council Emergency Session

Pakistan’s UN envoy Asim Iftikhar Ahmad urged the Security Council to implement decades-old resolutions on Kashmir, including a UN-supervised plebiscite, during a closed-door emergency session Monday, Anadolu Agency reported. The meeting followed heightened India-Pakistan tensions after an April 22 attack in Pahalgam, Kashmir, which killed 26 people.

Ahmad emphasized three goals: briefing the Council on regional security risks, advocating de-escalation, and reaffirming Kashmir’s disputed status under international law. He rejected India’s allegations of Pakistani involvement in the attack, offering instead a neutral investigation.

The envoy condemned India’s suspension of the 1960 Indus Waters Treaty and cited ongoing human rights violations in Indian-administered Kashmir, including extrajudicial killings and media restrictions. “Peace requires dialogue and respect for UN resolutions,” he stated, noting Kashmiris have “waited too long for self-determination.”

India maintains the attack had “cross-border links,” while both nations imposed reciprocal diplomatic sanctions, including visa cancellations.
