Germany Arrests Two Iraqis on Suspicion of Belonging to the Terrorist Organization “ISIS”

German authorities have announced the arrest of two Iraqi men in the state of Saxony on suspicion of belonging to the terrorist organization “ISIS” and participating in its armed formations during the years of the organization’s activity.

The Extremism Prevention Agency of the High Public Prosecutor’s Office in Dresden stated on Friday that the arrest operation was carried out concurrently with searches of the suspects’ residences in the cities of Dresden and Königstein. They have been charged with belonging to a terrorist organization abroad.

The agency clarified that the defendants are aged 33 and 27, and are suspected of having worked as fighters in various formations affiliated with the terrorist organization “ISIS.” It is alleged that one of them participated in the organization’s ranks from February 2016 until May 2017, while the other’s involvement is accused to have lasted from April 2016 to February 2017.

The agency added that investigations indicate the suspects were receiving a monthly salary for their activities within the organization’s ranks. Meanwhile, the competent authorities continue to investigate the nature of the roles they are believed to have played during that period.

During the searches, German authorities seized mobile phones, a laptop, and identity documents, which will be examined and utilized in ongoing investigations.

The defendants appeared before an investigating judge at the Higher Regional Court in Dresden, who ordered the execution of the arrest warrants issued against them and their detention pending trial.

German security and judicial authorities continue to pursue individuals suspected of belonging to or supporting terrorist organizations, as part of measures aimed at combating extremism and pursuing individuals accused of participating in terrorist group activities abroad.
