Sweden to Offer €32,000 for Refugee Voluntary Returns in 2026

Sweden will increase its voluntary return incentive for refugees from €900 to €32,000 starting January 2026, Rudaw reported citing Prime Minister Ulf Kristersson. The policy mirrors Denmark’s approach and aims to reduce refugee numbers by encouraging returns to home countries.

Kristersson acknowledged the drastic raise—a 3,455% jump—but cited the previous program’s failure: only 1 of 70 refugees accepted €900 in 2023. “This makes it easier for those who don’t see a future in Sweden,” he said, emphasizing integration challenges.

The move aligns with Sweden’s stricter immigration policies, which have already reduced asylum applications. The country hosts large refugee communities from Syria, Iraq, and Somalia, per UN data. Critics argue the sum is excessive, but the government defends it as cost-effective compared to long-term welfare expenses.

The Swedish Migration Agency will administer the payments, requiring proof of voluntary departure. Analysts note the policy may face logistical hurdles, including verifying safe returns to conflict zones.
