34 Civilians Killed in Afghanistan Amid Rising Violence in Early 2025

Between January and March 2025, at least 34 civilians were killed and 74 injured in Afghanistan, Amu TV reported cited the United Nations Assistance Mission in Afghanistan (UNAMA). Armed groups such as Islamic State Khorasan Province (ISKP) and the Afghanistan Freedom Front (AFF) were responsible for several deadly attacks during this period.

Key incidents include a February 11 suicide bombing in Kunduz that killed four civilians and 15 Taliban forces, claimed by ISKP, and a January 15 improvised explosive device (IED) blast in Mazar-i-Sharif that killed a boy and injured 19 nearby vendors. On January 18, a grenade attack at a Taliban checkpoint in Baghlan province caused one death and 18 injuries, claimed by AFF.

Explosive remnants of war also posed a serious threat, causing 42 casualties, of which over 80% were children. Cross-border clashes with Pakistan resulted in additional civilian casualties, including a February 1 airstrike killing three civilians in Paktika province.

UNAMA’s report highlights the worsening security situation and the heavy toll on civilians, including children, health workers, and market vendors.
