ICJ Hearings Examine Israel’s Aid Blockade as Gaza Humanitarian Crisis Worsens

The International Court of Justice (ICJ) has begun hearings on Israel’s compliance with UN immunities after it severed ties with UNRWA in October 2024, accusing the agency of harboring Hamas members—a claim UNRWA denies, BBC reported.
Palestinian Ambassador Ammar Hijazi accused Israel of a “genocidal campaign,” while Israel boycotted the proceedings, calling them a “politicized circus.” Only the U.S. and Hungary are expected to defend Israel.
The hearings follow UN reports of catastrophic conditions in Gaza: all WFP-supported bakeries have closed due to flour shortages, malnutrition is widespread, and medicine/fuel shortages cripple hospitals. Israel insists it complies with international law, citing 450,000 tonnes of aid delivered during the ceasefire. However, the WFP reports 116,000 tonnes of food remain stranded at closed border crossings.
The ICJ previously ordered Israel to allow unimpeded aid in 2024 rulings. With Gaza facing its longest-ever blockade, human rights groups accuse Israel of using aid as collective punishment. Over 52,000 Palestinians have died since October 2023, per Gaza’s health ministry.
