AI Adoption Could Save Workers 122 Hours Annually, Google Report Finds

A Google-led pilot study in the UK revealed that workers could save an average of 122 hours per year by integrating AI into administrative tasks, Reuters reported. Published on April 25, the AI Works report highlighted that simple measures—such as granting employees permission to use AI and providing basic training—could double adoption rates, potentially boosting Britain’s economy by £400 billion ($533 billion).

The study, conducted with small businesses, educational trusts, and a union, found that two-thirds of workers—particularly older women from lower socio-economic backgrounds—had never used generative AI. Debbie Weinstein, Google’s EMEA president, noted that concerns about legitimacy and fairness initially deterred participation. “People wanted ‘permission to prompt,’” she said, emphasizing the need for reassurance.

After just a few hours of training, participants used AI twice as frequently, with sustained engagement months later. For example, among women over 55, weekly usage surged from 17% to 56%, while daily use jumped from 9% to 29%.

Google partnered with consultancy Public First for the analysis, underscoring AI’s potential to narrow workplace disparities. The report calls for broader access to AI tools and training to unlock productivity gains.
