Amnesty slams Belgium for forcing asylum seekers into homelessness

Amnesty International has condemned Belgium for denying asylum to thousands, accusing the country of “manufacturing a homelessness crisis” and violating human rights. The rights group said the policy disproportionately targets “racialized single men,” leaving many asylum seekers without shelter, healthcare, or basic dignity.
Despite over 12,000 court orders demanding the government provide housing to asylum seekers, Belgium has consistently failed to comply, Amnesty noted. The organization fears the crisis will worsen under the new government, which has pledged to enforce “the strictest migration policy possible.”
Testimonies from Afghan and Palestinian refugees describe harsh conditions in makeshift squats, with broken facilities, lack of food, and little government support. Amnesty urged Belgium to provide sufficient reception centers and ensure access to healthcare, including psychological support. It also called on the EU to take action if Belgium continues to flout its legal obligations.
